Registrations needed for Women’s Fun Run

Apr 26, 2019 | 3:00 PM

Central Albertans are being encouraged to step up and suppurt the PCN Women’s Fun Run next month.

The May 11 event is a fundraiser for The Mustard Seed’s School Lunch Program and will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Lindsay Thurber High School Track.

However, Race Coordinator Val Jensen says the event is currently experiencing low fundraising numbers.

“Right here in Red Deer we make 57,000 lunches for local kids,” she explains. “And I’m sad to say the fundraising isn’t going that well, but we’ve rolled out something new… it’s the Community Diaper Dash!”

Jensen says it’s a 100 metre dash.

“The first person that stepped-up was Buck Buchanan (City Councillor),” she exclaims. “But he needs a few ‘bucks’ thrown his way. But he’s been challenged by his daughter Nicole (Red Deer Public School Board) from school board. So who is going to raise some money and make it down the runway the fastest?”

Jensen says a number of staff from Bo’s Bar and Grill are also anticipated to be taking part in the Diaper Dash which might contain an obstacle or two.

“There might be a sandwich in there but the big news, Keith Weber (Weber Physiotherapy Clinic), he is being challenged by a local gal,” adds Jensen. “Kathy Taylor (Totally Refreshed Steam, Spa and Salon). I’m putting my money on her. She’s totally going to kick his butt and she’s out fundraising.”

Also new this year, adds Jensen, is the Move Your Mood Family 3K.

“So now the guys can come out,” she explains. “We’ve already got quite a few registered, the boys they’re going to go longer, it’s a timed event, last event of the day at 1 o’clock, so we’re pretty excited to finally let the fellas in. So let’s see if the men come out and support the Mustard Seed!”

The Mustard Seed’s School Lunch Program provides nutritious lunches to vulnerable students across Red Deer. Every school day, volunteers make between 350 and 400 lunches that are delivered directly to over 30 schools.

Jensen says $10,000 in prizes are up for grabs, so requests those interested to register as soon as possible.

When registering to run, participants are encouraged to donate to the Mustard Seed School Lunch Program, as it directly benefits the children in our community.
