Structure fire at home in Kentwood neighbourhood under investigation

Aug 4, 2026 | 2:46 PM

Red Deer Emergency Services is investigating the cause of a structure fire on Kentwood Drive on Monday.

Assistant Deputy Chief Cole Starling said crews from five stations responded just before 5:30 p.m. to the fire located on the back of a home in north Red Deer.

He said on arrival the fire was outside of the structure and appeared to move into the attic space. He said once it moved into the attic that forced the crews to transition to a defensive fire position.

They were on scene within five minutes of the initial call and were there for approximately an hour and a half.

“It started in the back of the home and got into attic space and then there was significant damage to the inside of the structure as a result of that,” Starling said, adding the home is inhabitable at this point.

Despite rumours circulating on social media that the fire was caused by a barbecue explosion, Starling said the cause remains under investigation and that those rumours are false.

He would like to thank the home owners in the area who came out to support their neighbour as a result of the fire.

“There was one individual who was displaced as a result of that fire and watching the community support for him was just awesome,” he said. “There was folks bringing him chairs, water, and making sure he had a place to stay… Fire is our business and it always will be but it’s all those people in the community who come and help their neighbour when they have no requirement to. They do it from the goodness of their hearts.”

No injuries were reported and an update will be provided when the cause of the fire is determined.
