Originally from Kelowna, Barnstable suited up in two WHL seasons with the Vancouver Giants (2007-08) and the Red Deer Rebels (2009-10) before playing his final season of junior with the Lloydminster Bobcats (2010-11) of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

He then played two seasons at the University of British Columbia (2011-13) and three at Red Deer College (2013-16).

He also played several games for local senior hockey teams, including the Lacombe Generals, Innisfail Eagles, and Red Deer Rustlers.
