Wet’suwet’en Tsimshian musician from Red Deer releases debut album

A singer and songwriter, Brown is from Red Deer, but has Wet’suwet’en Tsimshian origins, and is using her music to connect with family and culture, she says.

“Playing With Fire was honestly inspired by playing with my cousins’ matches and lighter. I made a joke that it would be a ‘lit’ song. On the spot, I started making up Playing With Fire, but about playing with actual fire. I didn’t think much of it for a couple of months until it seemed right for a song,” Brown says.

“We were doing poetry in school, and I was writing about how I wanted control over my life and how I wanted out. It’s about freedom and testing my limits and how far I can push them, while also battling depression. It’s deep to me and has great significance.”

Uncle Brent Halfyard also serves as Brown’s producer and bassist/guitarist. The EP was recorded in his Ukee Sound Records studio in Ucluelet, B.C.

“He’s helped shape how I want my songs to sound and has been really amazing to work with,” Brown says.

Light the Fire is described as a churning, alt-rock declaration that picked up early support from outlets including Tinnitist, Cashbox Canada, Radio and Music and Record World International, along with attention from the production crew of CBS’s Tracker after catching Brown’s performance at an open mic in Ucluelet, B.C., notes well-known publicist and music commentator Eric Alper.
