Battle River-Crowfoot candidate to help lead new Libertarian Party of Canada

A former candidate in the federal riding of Battle River-Crowfoot has more to say on his political journey.

Michael Harris ran for the Libertarian Party of Canada in the by-election last year — the same one that saw 200+ names on the ballot to take on CPC Leader Pierre Poilievre who’d lost his seat in Ottawa.

A much younger candidate, Harris shared this week not only that he will run for the party again, but that he’s been elected as its deputy leader.

“Harris is bringing forward a message focused on liberty, family, and independence, with a strong emphasis on western Canada and Alberta’s right to have its future decided democratically. As deputy leader, Harris plans to help bring the question of Alberta independence into the federal political conversation and ensure that voters who support independence, decentralization, and greater provincial freedom have a political home,” he says in a release.

“A major part of Harris’s plan is to build a new youth wing for the party called Canadians for Liberty, aimed at recruiting young Canadians, training new organizers, and giving students and young voters a stronger voice in the liberty movement. The youth wing will focus on campus organizing, social media outreach, membership growth, and building a new generation of activists committed to freedom, personal responsibility, and limited government.”

Harris says he will assist new party leader, Derek Elliot, to get the party registered with Elections Canada.

According to the Elections Canada website, the party was deregistered as of March 31, 2026. It had been registered since June 2004.

It also notes that Harris received 103 votes, the eighth most. Poilievre won with 41,308 votes, or 80.9 per cent.
