New trial dates have been set for a man charged in a fatal stabbing incident in the Samson Cree Nation three years ago.

Ian Lawrence Saddleback, 44, is scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice from February 28, 2028, to March 6, 2028.

He was previously scheduled for trial on Nov. 3, 2025 and again from Feb. 2-13, 2026.

It was on June 3, 2023, just after 10 p.m., when Maskwacis RCMP received a report of a stabbing that had occurred at a residence on Samson Cree Nation.

Upon arrival, RCMP located a victim with serious injuries. Police say they attempted to administer first aid to the victim and called EMS. Sadly, upon EMS arrival, Mounties say the victim who was identified as a 34-year-old male resident of Maskwacis, was deceased. Officers quickly located and arrested a suspect.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation with the assistance of Maskwacis RCMP.

Saddleback was charged with second-degree murder.
