1.3% increase

Lacombe city council approves 2026 tax rates

Lacombe city council approved the 2026 property tax bylaw, marking a 1.3 per cent municipal property tax increase.

They also eliminated the previously anticipated one per cent special paving tax for this year.

The city says strong assessment growth generated additional one-time revenue this year. This allowed council to use that growth, along with a modest draw from reserves, to fund planned road improvements and offset the need for a paving tax, reducing the overall municipal tax impact for residents.

“Council was very mindful of affordability as we finalized this year’s tax bylaw,” said Mayor Thalia Hibbs. “When we had the opportunity to reduce the impact on residents, we chose to act.”

This means property owners in Lacombe will see a lower municipal property tax increase than originally reported during budget deliberations.

However, the city says the total property tax bill may be impacted by factors beyond its control, such as the provincial education property tax requisition, which has increased by more than 12 per cent this year.

“For many residents, the largest change they will see on their tax bill is related to the provincial education tax,” said Mayor Hibbs. “While the City works hard to manage its own budget responsibly, we do not control that portion of the bill.”

Property tax bills will also be impacted by assessed property values, which can further affect the total amount owing.

“We will continue to focus on responsible budgeting and ensuring that growth in our community supports the infrastructure and services residents rely on,” Hibbs added.

Property tax notices will be distributed in the coming weeks, with payment due by June 30, 2026.
