Wolf Creek Drivers Compete Among Alberta’s Best at Provincial Bus Road-eo

Three Wolf Creek Public Schools bus drivers recently put their skills to the test against some of Alberta’s best at the 43rd Annual Provincial School Bus Road-eo in Nisku.

Ben Murto, Afaf Elfard and Jerry Witvoet earned the opportunity to represent Wolf Creek Public Schools after advancing through the division’s local competition. Murto was recognized with a top 10 finish in the conventional bus category.

The Provincial School Bus Road-eo is the largest professional gathering of school bus drivers in Alberta, bringing together drivers, trainers, transportation leaders and families from across the province for a day of competition, professional development and camaraderie.

“It is the biggest professional gathering of school bus drivers from across the province,” said Tammy Freerksen, Administrative Assistant and Driver Trainer with Wolf Creek Public Schools. “Division and contract drivers, trainers, managers and families sign up year after year, and over the past 43 years, the event has become a school bus industry family reunion with tremendous energy and support for everyone involved.”

The competition begins with a written examination before drivers take on a challenging obstacle course designed to test the skills they rely on every day. Participants navigate common driving situations such as student pick-ups, railroad crossings, turning, backing up, curb parking and stopping accurately at designated lines.

Drivers are also challenged with a series of advanced precision-driving events. One obstacle requires competitors to guide an eight-foot-wide, 40-foot-long school bus through a narrowing lane with only inches of clearance on either side. Another tests a driver’s ability to smoothly maneuver the bus from one lane to another without stopping while remaining within a strict time limit. Competitors must also parallel park a full-sized school bus in a space only slightly longer than the vehicle itself.

“These challenges really showcase the skill, focus and professionalism required to safely operate a school bus,” said Freerksen. “The competition pushes drivers to perform at a very high level while also giving them the opportunity to learn from one another and celebrate their profession.”

At the conclusion of the event, drivers compete for a variety of honours, including awards for the top competitors in the conventional and small bus categories, team awards and recognition for professionalism and commitment to the industry.

“We are proud to have drivers who continually demonstrate a commitment to their profession and to student safety,” said Betty Clark, Transportation Manager with Wolf Creek Public Schools. “Ben, Afaf and Jerry represented Wolf Creek exceptionally well, and we are especially pleased to see Ben recognized with a Top 10 finish. Their willingness to challenge themselves and continue learning ultimately benefits the students and communities we serve.”

Wolf Creek Public Schools congratulates all three drivers on their accomplishments and thanks its entire transportation team for the care, professionalism and dedication they demonstrate each day in safely transporting students across the division.
