Sylvan Lake and Lacombe receive provincial funding to host Alberta Day events this weekend

Two communities in central Alberta will be hosting celebrations for this year’s Alberta Day.

The day was declared in 2022 by the government to celebrate when Alberta formally became a province on September 1, 1905, and to acknowledge the history, achievements, and opportunities available for Albertans.

“Alberta Day is a celebration of the story of how Albertans built a prosperous society – from Indigenous people, the first stewards of this land, to the pioneers who built the cities and towns we now live in, to those who chose Alberta and sought new opportunity and a chance to live as equals among their neighbours. This is our story, and it’s a story worth telling again and again,” said Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women.

The Town of Sylvan Lake and City of Lacombe were two of 33 municipalities to receive funding to help run an Alberta Day event.

SYLVAN LAKE

In Sylvan Lake on Friday, families can enjoy local vendors, Alberta-made products, and food trucks at the Sylvan Lake Farmers Market (5104 Lakeshore Dr.).

They can then take a stroll down to the Pier, at the corner of Centennial 50 Street and Lakeshore Drive, to enjoy live musicians and street performers like local Ukrainian musician Vitalii Vasykiev, circus art performer Flyin’ Bob, and The Misery Mountain Boys band.

Beginning at 4 p.m., there will also be a Tipi Display and Elder Storytelling.

LACOMBE

On Saturday, September 2, residents in Lacombe can enjoy numerous free activities like a family skate, public swim, square and line dance lessons, live music, downtown walking tours, indoors sports lessons and more across the city.

“We have such a strong community who love to just get out and be active and get together to celebrate all things Lacombe and Alberta and so we felt that this fit right in with us. When we have all of our community partners that are happy to jump on the bandwagon and get along with this festival, it makes it a lot easier to plan,” said Sheri Mitchell, Manager of Recreation for the City.

She said while the grant application had a quick turnaround process, they were able to receive $5,000.

Last year, Mitchell described the event as a great success after they received a $10,000 grant through the same funding stream.

This year’s event will have more partnerships with local organizations, she says, like the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre, Lacombe Museum, and a Blacksmith Shop, to name a few.

“It’s a really great opportunity for our community to show off what it’s like to be a Lacombian, an Albertan, all of the family-friendly things we have, how welcoming and open our community is. Why not invite the family down for a long weekend and have a day jam-packed with activities for everyone to explore? It’s a nice way to highlight our community and the people in our community,” she said.

The province says Alberta Day is an opportunity to celebrate the province’s rich cultural heritage and recognize the people and communities that make a strong, vibrant province.

On Saturday, starting at 11 a.m., the government will be hosting free, family-friendly celebrations at the legislature grounds in Edmonton and Heritage Park in Calgary, alongside a drone show in the evening. Local performers and vendors are expected to be showcased throughout the day.
