Sylvan Lake RCMP report decrease in Crime Severity Index

Aug 17, 2026 | 12:56 PM

Sylvan Lake RCMP have reported an overall decrease in the latest Crime Severity Index from Statistics Canada.

From 2024 to 2025, the Sylvan Lake municipal detachment CSI saw a 10.7 per cent decrease, from 83.9 to 74.9.

Furthermore, the detachment’s provincial CSI decreased 22.4 per cent from 76.4 in 2024 to 59.2 in 2025.

“Seeing such a decrease in the Crime Severity Index for both the municipality and the rural areas surrounding Sylvan Lake speaks to the work the RCMP officers are doing day in and day out, serving the people of Alberta,” said Sylvan Lake RCMP Detachment Commander S/Sgt. Jay Peden in a media release. “Although these numbers are declining, we recognize there is still work to do. I need to recognize the valuable role the community plays in public safety and crime reduction efforts through crime reporting, creating environments around their property to deter crime and engaging with their communities.”

The RCMP also reported a trend across Alberta RCMP jurisdictions, with a 10.4 per cent decrease in 2025 compared to 2024.

The CSI is a statistical measure that considers both the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime. It is calculated using the number and severity of criminal code offences reported within a community in relation to its population.

Sylvan Lake RCMP reports that the CSI is one of several tools used to understand local crime trends, among other things.

Some of their recent initiatives informed by those priorities include:

  • Crime Reduction initiatives, including continued compliance checks for offenders who have been released by the courts and enforcing terms of release.
  • Continued community engagement and attendance at community events.
  • In partnership with the Town of Sylvan Lake, the creation of a Youth engagement/Crime Reduction position which will focus on partnering with schools, as well as creating and implementing Crime Reduction strategies.
