High school football weekly rankings

Sep 8, 2022 | 11:13 AM

Here are the First Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in Alberta and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2022 season.

These rankings will come out every Sunday from now up until November 7. At that time, those will be the last rankings and teams will take this rank into Provincials.

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size over a three year average by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME(S) OF THE WEEK:

Tier I & III

#6 St. Francis Browns (Tier I) vs. #1 (Tier III) Cochrane Cobras

Game below rescheduled from Friday, Sept. 9, due to a referee shortage

Monday, September 12, 2022, 8:00 p.m., Spray Lakes Legacy Field, Cochrane

This is an interesting one as these are two of the most tradition laden powerhouses in the southern half of the province. St. Francis’s exploits in Calgary Division I are well known having won the title on a regular basis since the 1970’s and it’s hard to think of any other team that has won the Rockyview Championship in the past three decades other than Cochrane (although it has happened).

That they play in different Tier’s shouldn’t matter but there is an underlying storyline. This game will be exciting but also have some risk involved for both teams. Cochrane will be running the risk of biting off a bit more than they can crew against a powerful Tier I opponent while Browns – already smarting from their Week 1 loss to Harry Ainlay – face a different risk. A loss to a Tier III team for St. Francis – no matter how good that team is – is rankings kryptonite and in a year when rankings matter in terms of inclusion in the Brian Fryer Tier I Provincials, it’s a bit of a chance the Browns are taking.

These two have played before as it was St. Francis that ended Cochrane’s 40 game winning streak in 2018. Either way this will be a fun one early in the season.
