Contraband seized at Bowden Institution

Jul 8, 2021 | 11:23 AM

Officials say contraband worth nearly $136,000 has been seized at Bowden Institution’s medium security unit.

At about 11 p.m. on July 3, as a result of staff vigilance, a package containing contraband and other unauthorized items was seized outside near living units.

The contraband and unauthorized items seized included a micro cell phone with charger cable and SIM card, shatter, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, according to a release.

Police have been notified and are now investigating.

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors,” the release says.

“CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.”

CSC has also set up a tip line, it says, so that all federal institutions may receive additional information about activities related to security.

The toll-free number is 1-866-780-3784, and information can be given anonymously.
