Alberta reports 474 new COVID-19 cases, 11 deaths

Alberta confirmed another 474 cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

That’s out of 8,592 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of 5.4 per cent.

The number of Albertans hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Monday sits at 739, an increase of one. That includes 120 people in intensive care, three less than Sunday.

Another 11 deaths from COVID-19 were reported Monday to bring Alberta’s total to 1,447.

“While it is encouraging to see these numbers are going down, it is important to keep in mind that over the past 10 years, the average annual recorded death toll from influenza has been 58 deaths per year,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health said during her latest update on Monday.

“So, having lost an additional 11 people to COVID-19, which amount to almost 20 per cent of an average full year of influenza data, should not be taken lightly.”

There are now 11,923 active cases in Alberta, down 311 from Sunday. The province recorded another 774 recoveries on Monday to bring Alberta’s total to 103,941.

Alberta has administered 89,814 vaccine doses, including 3,879 on Sunday.

In Red Deer, the number of active cases as of Monday sits at 184, down nine from Sunday. There have been 1,507 recoveries, an increase of 16, as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to the city rose by five to 1,706.

Red Deer County has 45 active cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, down two, while Sylvan Lake has 34, a decrease of one.

There are 87 active cases in Clearwater County (Rocky Mountain House), an increase of one.

Lacombe County has 23 active cases, down five from Sunday, and the city of Lacombe has 23, same as Sunday.

Mountain View County has 27 active cases, Olds has 24, and Kneehill County has seven. Stettler and County remains with six active cases as of Monday.

The Central Zone has 1,148 active cases as of Monday, down 34 from Sunday, with 60 hospitalizations, a decrease of five. There are 10 people in intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, a decrease of two. No new COVID-19 deaths were reported in the Central Zone on Monday.

Hinshaw noted that since in-person classes resumed last Monday, January 11, 181 cases of COVID-19 have been detected at 133 schools. Hinshaw said these cases were the result of community transmission, not in-school transmission.
