Red Deer city council hold first meeting in newly renovated chambers

Red Deer city council chambers have been transformed.

On Tuesday, council held their first meeting in the newly renovated chambers, which were recently completed after approximately two months of construction.

In a statement from the City of Red Deer, the city said council chambers were renovated to modernize a key civic space that supports council meetings, public hearings and other formal governance processes.

The city explained the space needed renovations because of aging audiovisual and technology systems that no longer fully supported modern meeting expectations, including livestreaming, recording, presentations, hybrid participation and reliable meeting operations.

“The renovation also improved accessibility, safety, comfort, public participation and the overall functionality of the space,” they wrote in the statement.

The improvements include an updated room layout, reconfigured seating for council, administration and the public, new furnishings, enhanced accessibility, security improvements, new audiovisual and IT infrastructure, and updated floor finishes.

In addition, it improves public participation, accessibility, sightlines, safety, livestreaming, recording, presentations, hybrid meeting technology and overall meeting operations.

The project was made possible through two main budget allocations of $103,000 for demolition, construction, and furniture, as well as $273,000 for technology upgrades.

The technology investment supports livestreaming, recording, presentations, hybrid meeting participation and the systems needed to run formal council meetings reliably.
