Judy Gordon, a former long-time municipal and provincial politician and prominent Lacombe community member, has passed away.

She was 72.

Gordon was elected to Lacombe town council in 1986 and first served as mayor from 1989 to 1993.

Gordon then made the jump to provincial politics and was elected as the Progressive Conservative MLA for the newly-created Lacombe-Stettler riding in 1993. She was re-elected in 1997 and 2001 before retiring in 2004.

She was elected to her second stint as mayor of Lacombe in the 2004 municipal election and was acclaimed to a third term in the chair in 2007. She helped lead Lacombe’s transition to city status before retiring from politics for good in 2010.

“I feel really good about it, and I feel that this is a very positive move for Lacombe. Over the years, we will certainly see the benefits of moving to city status,” Gordon told the media at the time.

Gordon was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998 and was a long-time champion of the effort to find a cure.

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mayor Gordon. Judy served the community with distinction for her entire career, inspiring many others to serve. I always admired her can-do approach to municipal politics and appreciated her insight,” City of Lacombe Mayor Grant Creasey said in a statement.

“Lacombe continues to be a shining example of success due to her work as mayor. I know I speak on behalf of Council and the City of Lacombe when I say she will be dearly missed.”

Red Deer-Lacombe MP Blaine Calkins honoured Gordon on Thursday in the House of Commons.
