Alberta Government also pitching in to help food banks

Apr 10, 2020 | 12:27 PM

The Government of Alberta announced Friday that it is providing food banks and community organizations with $5 million to ensure all citizens have access to the necessities.

The money is in addition to $3 million announced on April 2 from Alberta Education towards nine not-for-profits to provide food assistance.

“As we navigate through this crisis we must work together to support Albertans in need,” says Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Community and Social Services. “We are focused on making food and shelter supports readily available and will continue to ensure our most vulnerable and at-risk people have secure access to food throughout this pandemic.”

Organizations wishing to apply for a piece of the funding can visit Alberta.ca.

This new funding is also on top of the $100 million announced for food banks last week by the federal government.

Also on Friday, Second Harvest shared that some of the funding it received from the federal government would be going to community groups in Red Deer.

The federal government said $20 million of the total $100 million would be split evenly between four specific organizations, including Second Harvest. The organization says in total, it is rolling out $4.5 million to various agencies in smaller communities.
