COVID-19 NOT KEEPING THEM DOWN

The Mustard Seed to expand school nutrition program, launch care package initiative

Apr 4, 2020 | 1:22 PM

As part of a larger $3 million boost for nine Alberta non-profits, The Mustard Seed Red Deer is receiving $300,000 from the Alberta Government to bolster its nutrition program.

The program typically serves 1900 lunches to 35 Red Deer schools weekly, but the COVID-19 pandemic initially threw a wrench into that. Managing Director of Central Alberta, Byron Bradley, says the program has continued with families dropping by The Mustard Seed to pick up lunches.

With the financial boost from the province, they’ll now be able to expand their reach further than before.

“The impact will go beyond Red Deer and into other communities around central Alberta. The need has grown to the point where we’re putting out 2300 lunches from Monday to Friday, above and beyond the school lunch program,” Bradley says.

‘We’re also helping Safe Harbour out, giving them 100 lunches a day, and 300 on Friday for the weekends at their new building.”

Lunches are also going to local agencies such as Turning Point and Potter’s Hands.

Details are still being worked out as to how lunches will get to individuals in outlying communities.

“Approximately 75 per cent of people who come to The Mustard Seed are housed, and our shelter is only for people who are homeless, so we’re also trying to come up with creative ways to care for those people in their homes,” Bradley shares. “They come here for the community; to eat with our volunteers, play crib with our volunteers, and to pray with them.

“For someone who doesn’t have the resources, the family or the relationships, it’s really hard for them right now.”

Separate from the nutrition program, but with the same goal of serving people in need, Bradley says starting Monday (April 6), The Mustard Seed is launching a care package program in collaboration with the Red Deer Food Bank. Food and hygiene items are both being collected to be sent to those who need it.

Donations can be dropped off at CrossRoads Church, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

More details on how to contribute to and register for the care packages will be shared soon on the organization’s Facebook page, he adds. If interested, you can also call The Mustard Seed at 403-347-1844.
