Depression Confessions coming to Red Deer

Mar 2, 2018 | 5:26 PM

An event aimed at beating depression and achieving emotional competency is coming to Red Deer this spring.

Coming off a successful pilot in Vancouver last December, ‘Depression Confessions’ is being hosted by a group of people who have their own stories to tell and will take place at the Centre for Spiritual Living (6315 Horn Street – south end of strip mall) on Saturday, May 12 from 1:00 – 5:30 p.m.

Event Organizer Barry Samson says it’s for people who may be in an emotional state they don’t know how to get out of.

“A few of us got together and created the first Depression Confessions,” explains Samson. “Essentially, we just told our story to an audience, both physical and streaming audience about our life through depression and essentially how we got better.”

He says the event also gave those in the audience a chance to ask them detailed questions and make it personal and relevant for them.

“By the end of the event, we created an opportunity for people to commit to being part of a three-month ‘Pod” process,” states Samson. “Essentially a group that meet virtually once-a-week for three months after that and it’s been quite exciting for me to both facilitate that process and watch people step-up and make changes to their lives.”

With the Pod process, Samson says people are actually doing it. They’re taking homework home every day and doing something differently in their life and getting different results.

“There are lots of books out there about how to get better and how to feel better,” says Samson. “The part that’s missing is execution, we need to DO something about it. So by creating essentially a virtual community where people are accountable to each other every week, that’s what we’re bringing.”

For the upcoming Red Deer event, the only one in Alberta, Samson says RDC is partnering with them to help their students overcome emotional issues they may be struggling with as well.

“We’re excited to bring it to town,” exclaims Samson. “We’ve got two people presenting from Calgary, two from Red Deer and then myself. I call Nanaimo, British Columbia home but I also live in Saskatchewan a little bit in the summer.”

He says they will basically tell their stories and then open the floor to questions.

“We want to make it an annual event so people can set their calendars a year ahead and know that we’re coming back to town,” admits Samson. “We want to grow this so people can bring predictability to their emotional lives. I believe the event and the Pod process after is going to constantly pare that down so people are going to be more and more aware of why they feel the way they do.”

Samson says an additional Depression Confessions event will likely take place in the Kelowna-Vernon area in May.
