Cruise Night returns at new location following short break

After a short hiatus, Red Deer Cruise Night is back.

The event, which takes places every Thursday night, will re-start July 19 in the east-side parking lot of Parkland Mall off 67 Street.

A few weeks ago, Cruise Night organizers were told they couldn’t stay at CrossRoads Church after complaints rolled in about a small group of car enthusiasts being too loud.

“We didn’t want to have it close down. It was announced to us that everything was fine and then a month later we were evicted due to some people not following the simple rules we have like no revving, no burning tires or racing up and down the roads,” says Dave Burden, event CEO. “We do try to keep it safe and community-friendly.”

In its 14th year, the event draws between 400 and 500 vehicles every Thursday night. It hit a high one night in 2016 when 767 cars showed up one evening.

Burden says in an effort to make the event more sustainable going forward, each vehicle will be required to make a minimum $2 donation, as opposed to one driver covering for several others.

Multiple charities could benefit, he says.

“We get quite a few walk-throughs, especially with the kids,” he says of Cruise Night’s importance to the community. “They get excited about the vehicles, which in turn grows them up to be able to be into the sport. We appreciate everything that everybody does to all of these vehicles, so we like to be able to see them share it with everyone else.”

Cruise Night runs every Thursday from 6-9 p.m. and is free for spectators.
