Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services lead joint vehicle operation

Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services announces the results of a joint force commercial vehicle operation.

The operation, which featured nine law enforcement and public safety agencies, focused on commercial vehicle safety in the City of Red Deer from June 9 to 11.

Police say they set up check stops at high traffic locations in Red Deer, including on Taylor Dr. and 77 St., Taylor Dr. and Highway 11A, Riverside Dr. and 77 St., 67 St. and 30 Ave., Red Deer City Landfill and 40 Ave., as well as the Red Deer Catholic School Bus yard and Prairie Bus Line yard.

“Red Deer Traffic Services would like to thank our partnering agencies for joining us in this highly successful operation. Working together on commercial vehicle safety plays an important role in keeping our community and our roads safer,” as written in a media release.

As a result, 98 commercial vehicles and 28 school buses were inspected. Police say that 50 of the commercial vehicles passed inspection, while 21 required attention, and 27 were taken out of service. In addition, 143 mechanical defects were discovered on commercial vehicles.

Meanwhile, out of the 28 school buses inspected, 21 passed, four needed attention, and three were taken out of service. Seven were also found to have mechanical defects.

Furthermore, 229 violations, 45 written warnings, and three violations for marked fuel were issued. As well, two vehicles were deemed unsafe by vehicle safety inspectors and police found one driver to be suspended, one driver to be impaired and executed two outstanding warrants.

The three-day operation was in collaboration with: Red Deer RCMP, City of Red Deer Community Peace Officers (CPO’s), Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol, Ministry of Transportation & Economic Corridors, Vehicle Safety Investigators, Tax and Revenue Administration, Fuel Tax Inspectors, Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis Inspectors, and Dangerous Goods Rail Safety Inspectors.
