Stay safe in & around the water this August long weekend

EDMONTON- As people participate in aquatic activities this August long weekend the Lifesaving Society wants to remind Albertans to keep these four water smart key messages in mind:

Stay Within Arm’s Reach and Provide Active Adult Supervision – Whether at a lake, river, stream or a pool, always closely and constantly watch children when they are in or around water. Consider designating an adult to supervise children swimming. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. 100% of children aged 0-4 who drowned in Alberta had no supervision or supervision was present but distracted.

Avoid Alcohol- Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor in boating and swimming related fatalities, particularly for young adults. Alcohol influences balance, coordination, and judgement, and its effects are heightened by sun exposure, wind, waves and dehydration, making it more difficult to get yourself out of trouble.

Wear a Lifejacket- Not wearing a lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device (PFD) is a major risk factor in boating-related fatalities. Check the label to ensure the lifejacket is Transport Canada approved, is the correct size and fits snugly. The Lifesaving Society strongly advocates for the wearing of lifejackets or PFDs as the most effective tool to reduce boating-related drownings in Canada.
