Rebels add a defenceman, move goaltender in pair of trades

The Red Deer Rebels announced multiple trades ahead of the season opener this week.

On Monday, the organization announced they traded for defenceman Kaden Meyer from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2028 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 18-year-old from Delta, B.C., played in 38 games for the Hitmen last season, where he gathered one goal and six assists.

In 2024-25, he was also named the BC Elite Hockey League’s U18 Player of the Year and Top Defenceman after he recorded 11 goals and 39 assists for 50 points in 36 games for the Greater Vancouver Canadians.

The left-shooting rearguard was drafted by the Kamloops Blazers in the sixth round, 124th overall at the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

Meanwhile, the Rebels completed a second trade on Monday that sent goaltender Peyton Shore to the Prince George Cougars.

In return, Red Deer received a sixth-round pick in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft, which was originally owned by the Penticton Vees.

The product of Winnipeg, Man., played 38 games for the Rebels, where he recorded a 4.22 goals-against average, an .863 save percentage, two shutouts, and a 11-19-1-1 record.

Shore was a part of the Rebels’ preseason roster, which also included goaltenders Matthew Kondro and Nathan Salisbury.

Barring more trades from the team in the coming days, Salisbury and Kondro should be the Rebels’ goaltending duo to start the 2026-27 campaign.

The Rebels will announce their opening night roster later this week.
