CMHC reports decrease in Red Deer housing starts so far this year

Red Deer has seen a decrease in housing starts during the first seven months of the year compared to the same time frame last year.

That is according to the latest figures released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) this week.

The numbers show Red Deer with a nine per cent decrease in housing starts in centres with a population of 10,000 and over from January to July of this year when compared to the same time last year.

According to CMHC, there have been 63 single-detached housing starts in the city so far this year, along with 207 other housing starts for a total of 270 to the end of July.

That compares with the 78 single-detached housing starts in the city from January to July 2025, along with 219 other housing starts for a total of 297 to the end of July 2025.

Elsewhere in the province, Calgary saw a 23 per cent decrease, with 12,855 housing starts in that city from January to the end of July this year, down from 16,601 during the same time frame last year.

Edmonton, meanwhile, has seen a 17 per cent decrease, with 10,858 total housing starts so far this year, down from 13,059 total housing starts during the first seven months of 2025.

However, Lethbridge saw an 31 per cent increase with 539 housing starts so far in 2026, up from the 412 reported during the same time frame last year.

Provincially, Alberta saw a 19 per cent decrease, with 26,118 housing starts from January to July 2026 compared to 32,268 reported in the same time frame in 2025.

Nationally, the country has seen a four per cent decrease in total housing starts so far this year.

According to CMHC, there have been 131,851 total housing starts during the first seven months of 2026. That’s down from 137,546 total housing starts during the same months in 2025.
