To make matters worse, Larry also did not have home insurance, which means there’s no coverage to help repair the damage. A structural engineer will be assessing the home to determine if anything can be salvaged.

Larry is also working with the Red Deer Native Friendship Society to apply for housing assistance while he figures out his next steps.

“At 70 years old, after a lifetime of working, this is an incredibly difficult position to suddenly find yourself in,” she wrote.

“We are starting this GoFundMe to give Larry some stability while the pieces are being sorted out. Funds raised will help with his immediate needs, temporary or future housing, clothing and personal necessities, replacing essential belongings, cleanup and recovery costs, and whatever comes next once the condition of his home is known. We don’t yet know whether Larry’s next chapter will mean rebuilding his home or beginning again somewhere new. What we do know is that he shouldn’t have to face it alone.”

Barsalou explained that the funds raised will help give Larry a little more security during an uncertain time.

“A fire can take a home in a matter of minutes. Rebuilding a life takes much longer. With a community behind him, we hope Larry won’t have to do it alone,” she added.

The City of Red Deer said in a statement that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
