Red Deer dethroned as Alberta’s most active community

Denise Fredeen, Move Your Mood coordinator, plus organizer of all local ParticipAction-related events, says Red Deerians have embraced this initiative wholeheartedly over the years, and should be proud of making physical activity and community well-being top priorities.

“Although we finished just short of reclaiming the Alberta title this year, there is so much to celebrate. Red Deer held first place in Alberta throughout the entire month of June and remained in the top five communities in Canada from start to finish,” says Fredeen.

“Airdrie made an incredible push in the final hours of the challenge, and congratulations to them on their well-earned win. This year’s results show that Red Deer continues to be one of the most active and engaged communities in the country. The real success isn’t measured by a ranking; it’s measured by the thousands of people who chose to get active, connect with others, and make their health and well-being a priority.”

Fredeen says one of the biggest lessons learned this year is that momentum matters.

Every organization, workplace, school, neighbourhood group, and individual contributes by logging their activities, she notes.

“We’ve built an incredible network of community partners over the past several years, and this challenge continues to strengthen those relationships,” Fredeen adds.

“We’re already excited to reflect on what we learned this year and explore new ways to engage even more residents and organizations in 2027.”

In the end, Red Deer finished second in Alberta, and fifth in Canada, with thousands of local participants tracking their physical activities throughout June.
