The Maskwacîs Education Schools Commission (MESC) announced they’ve incorporated a new Îyinîw Metawewina Teacher Resource into its schools.

The Îyinîw Metawewina Teacher Resource is meant to support the integration of traditional Indigenous games into the classroom.

The MESC says the resource is designed to support student physical development and incorporates cultural and historical context related to the games.

It also gives teachers structured opportunities to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into physical education programming.

The publication includes photography by Dianne Crane and features participation from members of the Maskwacîs Curriculum Department, including Ida Bull, Carla Badger, Danny Makinaw, Patti Johnson, Jolene Rain, Norine Buffalo, Paula Mackinaw, Warren Omeasoo, and Dianne Crane, as well as Adam Daigneault. MESC also acknowledges Dianne Crane and Lyndon Suntjens as co-authors of the resource.

“This resource provides practical support for educators seeking to incorporate Indigenous games into their teaching practice,” said Sharon Currie, Associate Superintendent of Learning Services.

Carla Badger, Director of Maskwacîs Curriculum, added that traditional games support both physical development and broader learning outcomes, including critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving, while reflecting Indigenous knowledge systems.
