NO PUBLIC RISK; THERE WERE NO BOMBS OR GUNS

Police presence over at Hunting Hills, Notre Dame and Collicutt

UPDATE: Red Deer RCMP say that a ‘hold and secure’ situation at two high schools and a recreation centre, following threats, has ended.

On May 13, at approximately 11:12 a.m., Red Deer RCMP received an anonymous threat made toward Hunting Hills High School. The initial report to police indicated that the school was surrounded by bombs and was going to be shot up.

Police responded and were on scene immediately as members were in the area, RCMP say. As a precaution, the nearby Collicutt Centre and Notre Dame Secondary School were also placed into a ‘hold and secure’ status while police investigated.

Hunting Hills High School administration and the Red Deer RCMP made a joint decision to release students from school for the remainder of the day, out of an abundance of caution.

Students were released from Hunting Hills High School to buses and parents in a controlled fashion.

Notre Dame Secondary School and the Collicut have been taken off ‘hold and secure’ and have resumed all regular activities.

Red Deer RCMP confirm there is no active threat or risk to the public. Police are taking this threat seriously and continue to investigate.

The “heavy police presence” has ended, though RCMP may still be in the area to conduct investigations.

“We understand this situation may be concerning for families and appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work closely with RCMP to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” added Jamie Rawlusyk, principal at Hunting Hills, in a letter to parents, which was also posted to the school’s website.

He added that parents can expect further communication later today regarding school operations for Thursday.

RCMP have not said there is any connection to an assault that occurred on May 11 near the Collicutt.

However, Red Deer Public Schools did issue a statement late Wednesday addressing both the May 11 assault, and the May 13 threats incident.

“In regards to this morning’s lockdown, Red Deer RCMP attended Hunting Hills High School after a threat was received via a 9-1-1 phone call, that bombs were placed and a shooting would occur,” they say. “As a precautionary measure, the school was placed into lockdown while Red Deer RCMP assessed the situation. We can confirm that no one was in the school with a gun and no bombs were found.”

Classes will resume Thursday, the division says.
