The 15th annual Grow Kids event will take over Red Deer’s Dawe and Collicutt recreation centres on Thursday.

The event promotes health and wellness for kids in Grade 5 across Red Deer Public Schools.

Formerly known as Grow Boys and Go Girl, the event was renamed a couple years ago to reflect a shared commitment to active and healthy physical, social, and emotional development for all students.

“We are so excited to welcome our Grade 5 students to this year’s Grow Kids,” said Sean Grainger, principal of West Park Elementary School.

“It’s so important that we continue to prioritize student wellness, and this event offers a meaningful opportunity to do just that.”

In addition to the wellness agenda, Grainger notes that Grow Kids provides an opportunity for grade five kids to experience a day mimicking many aspects of their first days of middle school- moving from class to class doing different learning activities, meeting new people, and learning from multiple people through the course of the day.

This year’s event is built around four core themes:

  • Respect
  • Understanding
  • Relationships
  • Responsibility

Throughout the day, students will take part in a variety of fun and enriching sessions, including:

  • Design Your Own Time Machine
  • Skateboarding
  • The “Living Library”
  • Hand Drumming
  • …and more!

It’s anticipated that more than 800 students will be participating, with an additional 100 high schoolers who are serving as volunteers and presenters.
