Red Deer Public Schools and RCMP expand partnership into high schools

Red Deer Public Schools announced they’ve expanded their partnership with the RCMP into both of the division’s high schools.

The division made the move in an effort to strengthen its commitment to safe and supportive learning environments through its ongoing partnership with the Red Deer RCMP.

As a result, the Youth and Community Action Team (YCAT) will have a consistent presence in Hunting Hills High School and Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, where they’ll focus on reducing and preventing youth crime by building positive, proactive relationships with students.

According to the division, the YCAT will also engage with students in everyday settings, helping foster trust and connection.

“At Red Deer Public, we know that strong relationships are at the heart of student success and well-being,” said Superintendent Chad Erickson. “Having RCMP officers in our schools as approachable, familiar faces helps build trust and contributes to a positive school environment. Allowing relationships to be built in meaningful ways can make a real difference in the lives of our students.”

Red Deer Public Schools says officers take on a mentorship role and connect with kids through conversations. school activities and guidance.

“By being present in schools, we have the opportunity to build genuine relationships with youth. When I began in the schools, students wondered why the RCMP were there. Now, I’ve built relationships and connections with students, and it’s not a surprise when they see me,” said Cst. Jenna Johnson of the Red Deer RCMP. “These connections are key to prevention. When students see officers as trusted adults, they’re more likely to seek support and make positive choices.”
