Warm weather impacts outdoor rink conditions in Red Deer

Jan 13, 2026 | 4:51 PM

The City of Red Deer announced that recent warm conditions have affected the condition of outdoor rinks across the community

The City explained that while residents are encouraged to enjoy the rinks, using them when the ice is soft or wet can cause damage that shortens the skating season overall.

“Skating on soft ice can create ruts and uneven surfaces, which require additional repair and maintenance. Limiting use during warm weather helps protect ice quality and ensures outdoor rinks remain open longer,” they stated in a media release on Tuesday.

“When outdoor rinks are not in good condition, residents are encouraged to consider other skating options, such as indoor arenas with public skating times. These alternatives provide safe and enjoyable opportunities to skate while helping preserve outdoor ice.”
