Woody’s Marathon goes May 19, registration open

May 10, 2024 | 9:31 PM

The 24th Woody’s Marathon/Half/10k is quickly approaching and registration remains open for Red Deerians and others to challenge themselves like never before.

The annual event is set for Sunday, May 19, with the runs taking competitors through Red Deer’s beautiful trail system, as per usual.

“Only the start and finish are on city roads. Everything else takes place on our trail system here and, besides our volunteers, that’s what makes the event so spectacular is the beauty from our trail system,” says Curtis Marquart, treasurer.

Marquart is estimating about 1,100 participants across all three races, although he expects most to be running the half-marathon or 10 km option. Online registration closes the night of May 16, but residents can register in-person the following Friday and Saturday at the École Camille J. Lerouge School gym.

There will be a food tent, DJ, and announcer at the start/finish line and afterwards, an awards ceremony and live music will take place in Camille’s gym. There will also be a face-painter, balloon artist, and an ice cream truck with proceeds going directly to the Red Deer Food Bank.

Runners will start and finish the race on the road between École Camille J. Lerouge School and Lindsay Thurber High School. The full- and half-marathon runners take off at 8:15 a.m., and the 10 km runners leave at 8:00 a.m.

There are no trail closures associated with the run, but residents using the trails that morning are asked to be courteous and give runners space. There will be a brief road closure at the start of the race for 25-30 minutes.
