August 2022 Incident

Co-accused in alleged kidnapping with firearm incident ordered to stand trial

One of three people charged in an alleged kidnapping with a firearm incident in central Alberta has been ordered to stand trial.

Alexandra Louise Rain, 25, was ordered to stand trial last month, following a preliminary hearing in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Dec. 22, 2023. A trial date, however, has yet to be set.

Rain is charged with kidnapping with a firearm, forcible confinement, robbery, uttering threats, and assault.

It was on Saturday, August 13, 2022, when Maskwacis RCMP responded to a call for service on the Samson Cree Nation where a female reported being kidnapped by multiple individuals and held against her will.

Mounties say the female was forced into a vehicle, threatened with her life, and a firearm was held to her head. After some time, the female was able to break free from being restrained and fled to safety. Police say the female was treated for minor injuries and was expected to make a full recovery.

As the investigation unfolded, police say they were able to quickly identify three suspects and take two into custody. The third suspect was later arrested and charged.

Amy Natasha Okeymow, 38, of the Samson Cree Nation, was sentenced in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Oct. 23, 2023, to 21 months in jail, two years of probation, and a 10-year firearms prohibition. She was convicted on one count of unlawful confinement.

Her sentencing followed that of co-accused, Richard Stanley Soosay, 31, also of Samson Cree Nation, who was sentenced on May 15, 2023, to 90 days in jail and given a lifetime firearms prohibition after being convicted on one count of possession of a prohibited firearm.
