Preliminary hearings scheduled for pair charged in alleged kidnapping with firearm incident

Preliminary hearings have been scheduled for next year for two of three people charged in an alleged kidnapping with a firearm incident in central Alberta this summer.

Alexandra Louise Rain, 24, from the Maskwacis area, is scheduled to find out on April 14, 2023, in Wetaskiwin provincial court if her case has enough evidence to go to trial.

While Richard Stanley Soosay, 30, of the Samson Cree Nation, is scheduled to find out on May 15, 2023, in Wetaskiwin provincial court if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

A third individual charged, Amy Natasha Okeymow, 37, of the Samson Cree Nation, is scheduled for plea in Wetaskiwin provincial court on Nov. 17, 2022.

It was on Saturday, August 13, 2022, when Maskwacis RCMP responded to a call for service on the Samson Cree Nation where a female reported being kidnapped by multiple individuals and held against her will.

Mounties say the female was forced into a vehicle, threatened with her life, and a firearm was held to her head. After some time, the female was able to break free from being restrained and fled to safety. Police say the female was treated for minor injuries and was expected to make a full recovery.

As the investigation unfolded, police say they were able to quickly identify three suspects and take two into custody.

Richard Soosay and Amy Okeymow were charged with the following:

• Kidnapping with a firearm
• Forcible confinement
• Uttering threats

RCMP said following the arrests that Soosay faced additional charges of pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

Maskwacis RCMP then requested the public’s assistance in locating the third and final suspect.

Alexandra Raine was later charged with:

• Kidnapping with a firearm
• Unlawful confinement
• Threats cause death/bodily harm
• Assault
• Robbery
