Red Deer MS Walk on May 26 to celebrate resiliency and strength

May 17, 2024 | 2:07 PM

The annual Red Deer MS Walk, raising funds to fight MS, is slated for Sunday, May 26 at Bower Ponds.

The MS Walk is also for raising awareness about what MS is — that is Multiple Sclerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system.

According to recent data, around 90,000 Canadians (1 in 400) are living with MS, with 12 new diagnoses every day.

Michelle Joseph, Red Deer MS Walk committee member, says the key message this year is about celebrating the strength and resilience of Canadians with MS.

“Sadly, Canada has one of the highest rates of MS worldwide. The disease can affect vision, memory, balance and mobility, and it can affect people differently with varying levels of disability,” says Joseph, who has MS herself.

“I was diagnosed 13 years ago. My MS has progressed enough that I do not work anymore because I don’t have the energy to teach effectively. It’s a very taxing illness and teaching is a very energetic career. Simply put, it’s hard to teach when you can’t move.”

Treatment, in Joseph’s case, includes daily pills and once-weekly injections, which control the hypersensitivity and stop the disease’s progression. Relapse, something she knows about very well, is still a possibility, however.

Organizers are aiming for 100 participants and to raise $40,000. About $19,000 has been raised as of May 17.
