Youth HQ receives huge donation from Sunrise Rotary

Red Deer’s Sunrise Rotary Club has made a sizeable and what some are calling transformative $100,000 donation to Youth HQ.

The contribution will support programs and services that help young people and families throughout central Alberta, Youth HQ noted in a release.

Key programs that will benefit include: Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Camp Alexo, and the 49th Street Youth Shelter.

“This remarkable investment reflects Rotary’s unwavering commitment to building a stronger community by investing in young people,” stated Rob Lewis, executive director, Youth HQ.

“Their generosity will have a lasting impact, helping ensure that children and youth have access to caring mentors, enriching experiences, safe spaces, and opportunities to achieve their full potential.”

Sunrise Rotary Club explained the reasoning behind their selection of Youth HQ.

“Making the money through the array of local fundraisers we have hosted was the easy part.   Reaching consensus on the process to disperse funds and how to evaluate the multitude of potential recipients was definitely more difficult,” said Judy Ann Wybenga, club president.

“Then the day came when we knew Youth HQ was celebrating an incredible milestone of 50 years of serving youth in our community. The track record of Youth HQ is impressive, and our club has made donations to Youth HQ for Camp Alexo, 49th Street Youth Shelter, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer, and Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer & District.”

Wybenga continued, saying that when she proposed they pivot to donate it all to Youth HQ, the motion to the board was approved unanimously.

She also said it fits the club’s strategic plan and the focus of its membership.

“We look forward to working with the experts at Youth HQ to deliver services to our youth that promote green time, not screen time, and help them find their way to being confident, connected and able to navigate the challenges of growing up with the full support of our community,” she says.

“We do believe in possibilities and dreaming big. Sempre Avanti — Always Forward.”
