Red Deer Catholic teacher honoured with Friends of Education Award

A retired teacher with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools has been granted the prestigious Friends of Education Award from the Alberta School Boards Association.

The honour recognizes the work of Maureen Miller, who, alongside her late certified St. John Ambulance therapy dog, Zoe, created a more caring environment for kids, fostered literacy, and advanced student mental health in her time with the division.

Miller’s advocacy resulted in the landmark Animal-Assisted Interventions Policy, the division notes.

The policy, established at Red Deer Catholic, has since become a model utilized by divisions across the province.

“Maureen understood long before many others that emotional safety is the doorway to learning, and in Zoe, she found the perfect partner. What started as small reading circles beside our office blossomed into a division-wide gift of healing, laughter, and literacy—with Zoe turning reading from a source of stress into pure joy with every trick and wagging tail,” said Dorice de Champlain, an administrator with the division.

“Maureen and Zoe didn’t just step into our schools; together, they stepped directly into the hearts of our kids when they needed it most. Their gift for meeting children with unconditional warmth and making every child feel safe, capable, and deeply loved is the very essence of Catholic education.”

It’s estimated that Miller and Zoe’s work impacted more than 1,000 students, particularly at St. Martin de Porres School, St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School, and École Camille J. Lerouge School.

Zoe passed away in 2024, but Miller kept working and redirected her efforts toward supporting ESL students, particularly those displaced by the war in Ukraine.

She has a book called God-Dog Moments, and another bilingual one called Zoe the Superdog/Zoé le superchien.

The division notes it plans to introduce a new therapy dog named Heidi to school hallways soon.
