Alberta Culture Days being celebrated across the central region all month long

Alberta Culture Days are among us here in central Alberta!

From September 1- 30, Albertans are being encouraged to discover, experience, and celebrate arts and culture through local events and activities, in person and online.

The Government of Alberta also announced that the provincial Month of the Artist was moved to September to complement the initiative. Alberta is the first and only province in Canada to dedicate a month to artists.

Various community organizations across central Alberta are hosting events:

CITY OF RED DEER

The Red Deer Arts Council will be hosting a variety of exhibitions throughout the entire month, including an open studio from September 9-10 where those interested can visit artists at work in their home studios to see creativity in progress and learn about the artistic process.

An entire schedule can be found on their website, with events held by the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery, Norwegian Laft Hus Cultural Centre and Museum, and the Country Pride Dance Club.

In addition, a Multicultural Market will be held at Festival Hall on September 23 by Care for Newcomers and the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society, with sellers of paintings, jewelry, beadwork, ribbon skirts, baking, and more alongside a variety of ethnic food and entertainment.

On September 24, the Red Deer Public Library will be hosting an Author Festival – Book Launch and Market, presenting three Alberta authors with readings and a conversation, among other local authors offering their new reads. The Library will be hosting other events throughout the month as well.

CITY OF LACOMBE

From September 9-10, the Ellis Bird Farm will be hosting an event titled “Connections: Learning from the Land” with interactive activities, teepee teachings, medicine walks, exhibits and crafts that highlight Indigenous culture, ecological knowledge, and the interwoven relationship of Indigenous peoples with land, animals and nature. Partners include the Red Deer Native Friendship Society, Urban Aboriginal Voices, Rainy Creek Ranch and Lacombe Museums.

TOWN OF SYLVAN LAKE

From September 8-10, the Town will be hosting a unique culinary and art experience called “CulinART!” where residents can follow a route to various culinary stations and art installations around downtown while sampling local bites, beverages, art, and music.

On September 23, the Town is calling all plaid enthusiasts to the Flannel and Feast Festival filled with arts, music, food, and entertainment, celebrating the laidback cabin lifestyle, hipster fashion, robust facial hair, and lumberjack culture.

TOWN OF OLDS

On September 23, the Town will be hosting a “Sharing our Culture” event at the Olds College Werkland Agriculture and Technology Centre where guests can visit various performances and booths to learn about the different cultures in the area, represented through dance, music and food.

On September 24, the Mountain View Moccasin House, in partnership with the Town and the Olds Municipal Library, will host a Mini Film Festival showcasing a two-hour presentation celebrating the diverse and thought-provoking short films from the National Film Board of Canada.

TOWN OF BLACKFALDS

The Town is hosting a variety of events throughout the month like free skating, drive-in movies, pickleball classes an art demonstration, a miniature figure paint-a-thon, food truck festival, Ukrainian food sampling, and more.

TOWN OF STETTLER

The Town has organized over 15 events throughout the month ranging from Asian art exhibits, culinary classes for Filipino, Japanese, and Korean cuisine, genealogy workshops to explore family history, downtown ghost walks, dance classes, arts and crafts and more.

TOWN OF SUNDRE

From September 22-23, the Sundre & District Museum will be hosting a variety of demonstrations, concerts, programming and workshops for families, seniors, individuals, visitors, and residents. Some activities include art displays, cowboy poetry, hand quilting, Japanese kite making, natural dye workshops and more.

Nationally, Culture Days will be celebrated from September 22 to October 15. Last year, more than 500 communities across Canada participated to increase awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of locals residents in the arts and cultural life of their communities.
