Volunteer network arranging gifts for Alberta seniors

Dec 7, 2022 | 9:40 AM

A group called Communities of Alberta Networking (CAN) is hoping Albertans will help spread some holiday cheer to local seniors this festive season.

Started in Onoway three years ago, the group is steadily spreading across Alberta, and last year made sure 1,800 Alberta seniors received gifts, typically ranging from $20 to $30 in value. This year, the group hopes to impact 2,400 seniors.

Cheryl Ellis, CAN treasurer, says the seniors homes they assist are ones less funded than those in larger cities.

“There are a lot of seniors in these homes whose families aren’t nearby. They may even live in another province, so these seniors wake up literally alone with no family close,” says Ellis. “We shouldn’t be forgetting our seniors, some of whom are also veterans. This is a nice way to put a smile on their face and let them know community members know they’re there and that they are cared about.”

Two homes in particular are still in need of many gifts.

Bethany care home in Didsbury has the need for 16 males and 54 females, while Sunset Manor in Innisfail needs them for 23 males and 56 females.

Gifts may include:

  • Christmas card with handwritten message
  • chocolates
  • baked goods (not homemade)
  • lap blankets
  • crosswords
  • magnifying glass
  • nail clippers
  • brush
  • comb
  • adult colouring book and crayons/pencil crayons
  • handmade Christmas ornaments
  • chapstick
  • lotion
  • hair care items
  • kleenex
  • body wash
  • journal and pen

**NO sharp items, candles or home-baked goods

If you want to contribute, email cheryledawnellis@gmail.com, and donors will be able to choose a man or woman to send a gift to.

“Really, you can buy whatever you want,” adds Ellis. “When going to get a gift, think of your senior as your own grandma or grandpa.”
