Red Deer council votes down cannabis store application near St. Joseph High School
It was a close call, but Red Deer city council narrowly defeated second and third readings of a proposed cannabis retail store that would have opened across the street from St. Joseph High School.
More specifically, council rejected the application for the cannabis retail store site exception, which was proposed to be located at 2120-90 Thornburn Avenue, following a 4-5 vote.
Mayor Cindy Jefferies and councillors Tristin Brisbois, Jaelene Tweedle, and Dianne Wyntjes were in favour. Meanwhile, councillors Kraymer Barnstable, Adam Goodwin, Cassandra Curtis, Bruce Buruma, and Chad Krahn voted against the application.
Chris Andrew, board chair of Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, asked council to oppose the application of the cannabis store, which would have been within 170 metres of the school.
