A Red Deer neighbourhood is getting a new playground, and when the day comes that it’s ready to be played on, they can give a thanks to the Calgary Flames Foundation, which just contributed $25,000.

The grant is going to the Waskasoo Community Association for a playground to be located at 45 Avenue and 58 Street. The playground is phase three of a project which has already seen the installation of community gardens and a gazebo.

“The new playground is divided into three areas: a swing area with baby swings, a large sand play area with buried bison bones, and a play sculpture area. Designed by Earthscape Play in Ontario, the sculpture is the main feature and will be a twelve-foot-tall sculpture of a wooden elk’s head tipped back and ready to bugle,” the community association says.

“It will incorporate log jam antlers, ropes, a net, rubber panel slides, a bench, climbing holds, and two wheelchair accessible entrances. These play areas will be nestled in new landscaping including a meandering path, picnic patios, landscaped borders, a berm, and a small play field.”

According to the association, the overall project arose out of research conducted by The City, which determined that Waskasoo needed new play amenities for young children as well as a place to facilitate formal and informal community gatherings.

The association is now applying for a matching Community Facility Enhancement Project Grant from the Province, with hopes the playground will be complete by fall of next year. The project’s total cost is about $380,000, with about $155,000 raised to-date.

Project partners include Shunda Consulting and Construction Management, The City of Red Deer, and the Red Deer Central Lions Club.
