Decision expected following kidnapping and beating incident trial

May 16, 2022 | 4:01 PM

A decision is expected next month following a trial last week for a central Alberta man accused of abducting and beating a woman last year.

Lionel Richard Twins, 61, of the Louis Bull First Nation, is scheduled to learn the outcome of his trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Queen’s Bench on June 17, 2022.

Twins is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping without a firearm, aggravated assault, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and two counts of assault in the January 2021 incident.

According to Maskwacis RCMP, it began around 11:00 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2021 when officers were called to the Cree Nation community of Pigeon Lake after learning an adult female had been abducted from a residence.

Police searched throughout the night for the suspect vehicle, and in the early morning hours, were dispatched to a commercial business after a witness located a female with life-threatening injuries.

Mounties and EMS responded immediately and confirmed the woman was the abducted victim from earlier in the evening. She was taken to a local area hospital for treatment, in serious condition.

RCMP located and stopped the suspect vehicle around 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2021, but the suspect is said to have fled into a wooded area. He was apprehended, however, after a brief foot chase.
