Alberta RCMP recognize work of officers across province in support of National Police Week

May 16, 2022 | 1:52 PM

Sunday, May 15, marked the start of National Police Week 2022.

The annual campaign hosted by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, encourages new connections between police and the people they serve. Officials say the purpose of the campaign is to show how police officers are not only members of the community they live in, but also members of the policing community they work in.

In support of this year’s campaign theme Connected to Our Communities, the Alberta RCMP is sharing profiles of members from different detachments across the province on its social media platforms. Mounties say these profiles will provide Albertans insight into why these individuals chose a career in law enforcement, their favourite part of working in their community, and even a favourite memory from the job.

“I joined the RCMP to show my appreciation and gratitude for our great country and its citizens. As a first generation immigrant, it was important for me to contribute back to Canada,” says Cst. Omid Nezami, Calgary.

“I work throughout southern Alberta and love working with, and learning about, all the diverse people, communities, and newcomers to Canada. I am able to promote the RCMP in a very honorable and positive way, which is a great feeling for me,” added Cpl. Geordie Simpson, Airdrie.

“My favourite memory is building a rapport with the students in the community and being asked to be master of ceremonies for two different high school graduations,” shares Cst. Neil Muz, Leduc.

“Policing is about working with people, building community and earning trust, each and every day,” says Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki, Commanding Officer of the Alberta RCMP. “National Police Week is an opportunity to recognize the police professionals working together with the citizens and communities we serve. Policing requires dedication, commitment and sacrifice, and I am proud to work alongside Alberta RCMP employees who work tirelessly to uphold the safety and well-being of all Albertans.”

Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Tyler Shandro, issued the following statement to recognize National Police Week:

“Every day, the dedicated men and women of Alberta’s police services go to work to protect people in the communities they serve – and they do it not knowing if the next call will bring them face to face with a life-and-death situation.

“Our brave police officers summon the courage to answer the call when Albertans need them, all too aware of others before them who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

“In Calgary, colleagues of Sgt. Andrew Harnett faithfully do their duty every day, even as they still remember him and grieve his death in the line of duty less than two years ago. The same is true in Edmonton, where Const. Daniel Woodall died in service of his community in 2015, and among RCMP officers across this province who served alongside Const. David Wynn, who died in the same year.

“Hearing about incidents when police officers have given their lives or risked their own safety to protect others is a big reason why we consider them heroes in uniform. Police officers have truly earned that title, but it’s not only for what we read in the headlines: for every act of bravery or arrest that makes the news, there are thousands of calls when a police officer has made a difference in someone’s life.

“The theme of National Police Week this year is Connected to our Communities, and it’s a true reflection of the important role that police play in our everyday lives. On the job, police officers enforce the law and investigate crime – but they are also protectors who help those in distress.

“During this National Police Week, I want to thank our dedicated police officers for working day in and day out to make Alberta a better place to live. If you see a police officer this week, please take a moment to say ‘thank you’ or offer a friendly smile and a wave. It’s a small gesture of appreciation for everything they do to keep us safe.”
