WATCH: Radio hosts share passion for emerging and Canadian musicians in new podcast

A new Red Deer-based podcast spotlighting emerging and popular Canadian musicians is now available for your viewing and listening pleasure.

Hosted by two of Red Deer’s best radio hosts, Peter Michaels and Patrick Bateman, The Road, The Stage will introduce you to life on the road, and the trials and tribulations of being a music lawyer, among many other things.

The Road, The Stage focuses primarily on emerging Canadian talent, which Michaels and Bateman, announcers on 106.7 REWIND Radio (formerly 106.7 The Drive) share their love for through their interviews.

“Just because we transitioned to a new format on REWIND Radio, that doesn’t stop the growth of the music scene here in Red Deer, and we still want to be involved in that. We think it’s important,” says Bateman, who came to Red Deer in 2015. “It’s a beautiful thing to see year after year some of the shows and acts that have come through the city.”

Michaels, who was present for the birth of The Drive in 2004, says it comes down to passion.

“We’re very passionate about new music,” says Michaels, noting the podcast is an endeavour entirely separate from the radio station.

“We love the music that REWIND plays, but we’re also very passionate about exploring new music, promoting new music and helping new artists. This is a way to continue that.”

Artists interviewed through six episodes include Tyler Bancroft of Said the Whale, Eric Owen from Black Pistol Fire, Tarek Jafar from The Blue Stones, Dave Ritter with The Strumbellas, Kurt Dahl of One Bad Son, and The Beaches.

Episodes are typically about an hour long and are recorded out of a studio in downtown Red Deer.

Producing the show are two other well-known names on the local music scene, Ryan Kuly and Ryley Surian, while Brennen Wowk and Bo’s Bar & Stage are powering the show.

“The music community is very tight knit and super talented, but the community of fans here is amazing as well,” Michaels says. “There are so many people who’ve become friends with one another by going to the high-calibre shows we’ve had in Red Deer, and we wanted a little bit of way to keep that moving forward.”

New episodes of The Road, The Stage are released each Wednesday. You can find them at the Bo’s Bar & Stage YouTube channel, or wherever you download podcasts (Apple Music, Spotify, Google Podcasts).
