Lindsay Thurber presents “Annie” in virtual format

Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive students and staff have adapted to current circumstances and turned “Annie” the live musical into Annie the streaming musical.

Shows run April 23 – May 1 and will be streamed online during performance times. Tickets to each showtime are available for purchase online.

Because the production cannot be performed in front of a live audience due to the pandemic, this year has provided a unique opportunity to combine the expertise of the students in the Theatre Arts program with those in the Motion Media program to film and edit a recording of the show that will be streamed online.

“This has been a fun production to work on, and for us teachers, there have been some learning curves in terms of how it has to work this year,” said Tara Koett, Teacher at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, adding this year’s production of Annie is fitting. “This production is timely in that it’s a story about hope, about connection, about family. The show takes place in the Great Depression. There have been a lot of interesting parallels.”

Between cast and crew, there are more than 60 students involved in the production – some of whom have never been together in the same room during the process. The students spent two weeks filming after school and on weekends. The Motion Media students are now taking all of the footage and helping edit it to prepare for streaming.

“The vocals for the show have been pre-recorded with students one on one to comply with COVID-19 guidelines,” said Koett. “Every single musician and performer who has been recorded has come in to do a studio session.”

Gilles Theriault, Teacher at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, said it’s been a great experience for his students to be involved in this year’s production.

“Every time students have the opportunity to work with other students in other areas of the school is always a positive thing,” he said. “This collaboration has given my Motion Media Arts students a chance to see what it is like to be part of a real production.”

Koett added having Motion Media Arts students film the production provides an opportunity that her Theatre Arts students might not otherwise get.

“What is really great is that normally our students don’t get to see their own performances, but with being able to film, they are able to see themselves,” she said. “It’s been a really great experience.”

In addition, some of the Division’s elementary schools will watch the production and have the opportunity to interact with some of the cast and crew.
