Grubbe steps in top centre role, Rebels announce March schedule

Centre Jayden Grubbe is back for his second season with the Red Deer Rebels and is already showing he is ready to play, collecting a goal and two assists on opening weekend.

“It was weird playing the first game in over a year, never really had that big of an offseason. It was nice to get the game finally going,” said the 18-year-old former first round WHL Draft pick of the Rebels in 2019.

The Rebels are looking for Grubbe to take more of a leadership role this season and have rewarded him with top centre assignments and minutes thus far.

“I feel like I’m doing pretty good so far, but trying to build every day and get better, just trying to get back in the game here, keeping it simple playing hard.”

The Calgary native is quite aware of how vital a win this weekend over the Calgary Hitmen, who will be playing their first game of the season, would be for the club after going 0-1-1 versus Medicine Hat.

“We should have a bit of an edge already playing two games and Calgary coming out fresher. I think we will have to come out ready to go Friday.”

Winning key face-offs in crucial moments can go a long way towards winning games and Grubbe’s faceoff percentage improved between games one and two, going from 46 per cent to 59 per cent.

“That is something I’ve always liked doing, being the go-to guy for face-offs. That is something that kind of excites me. I look forward to it and study the other guys’ habits before the game… That is something I like to work on.”

Rebels Assistant Coach Ryan Colville was greatly impressed by Grubbe’s play in the first two games.

“I thought he was awesome. He is definitely a lot more powerful. It’s a big jump going from 16-year-old season to 17-year-old season, and he has a full year of just training,” Colville noted.

“You definitely see the strength. I thought his pace of play really improved, and his game speed has really improved.”

Grubbe is eligible for this year’s NHL Draft. He has 32 points in 59 career games played with the Rebels.
