$207-Million project underway

Red Deer Justice Centre to rise high above downtown

The new Red Deer Justice Centre being built in the city’s downtown will bring a dynamic new look to area.

Work on the $207 million facility got underway in September and is slated for completion in the spring of 2023. It’s being built on the piece of land along 48 Avenue where the former Red Deer RCMP Detachment building once stood.

Alberta Infrastructure says all shoring and initial site servicing work is complete, and that the contractor (Clark Builders) is starting work on the building foundations, which includes concrete strip footings.

The nine-story, 312,000-square-foot building will replace the existing Red Deer Courthouse built in the early 1980s that has continually dealt with capacity and technology issues in recent years.

The city’s population has doubled since the Red Deer Courthouse was built and it is not structurally feasible to add any additional floors to the building.

In addition to bringing state-of-the-art technology and a visually stunning appearance, concept renderings from Group 2 Architecture Interior Design reveal the Red Deer Justice Centre will also work around historic Parsons House, which will remain at its current location off the corner of 48 Avenue and 49 Street.

The Red Deer Justice Centre will accommodate up to 16 courtrooms, 12 of which will be ready when the facility opens in 2023.
