Inaugural Dan Jefferies Memorial Golf Tournament moves online

Jun 6, 2020 | 11:00 AM

Central Albertans are encouraged to play a round of golf, enjoy a cold local brew, and honour a much-loved member of the community – all for a great cause.

The First Annual Dan Jefferies Memorial Golf Tournament was to take place at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club on June 22, but due to COVID-19 the event has been postponed until next year.

But organizers say there’s no reason why Dan’s life can’t still be celebrated while raising funds for the Central Alberta Cancer Centre.

“In the spirit that Dan lived his life – taking what came his way, never giving up, and always taking a positive point of view – the show must go on!”

Jefferies’ son Collin says the idea of establishing a fundraising golf tournament in support of the Central Alberta Cancer Centre came to him late last year following the death of his father in July, 2019.

“He always liked golfing and had been a shareholder at the Country Club since 1991, and he pretty much grew up there,” says Jefferies. “He worked in the back shop as a junior member and always liked getting people together and doing fun stuff with friends and family and putting money towards a good cause. So that’s what sparked the idea in my head, then it just kind of took off.”

However, after months of planning, Jefferies admits COVID-19 forced them to come up with some other ideas for 2020.

He says you can participate in the DJ Memorial Virtual Tournament this year by playing a round of golf in Dan’s memory, then submitting a picture to the event’s Facebook or Instagram pages with #DJMEMORIAL2020. All submissions will be entered to win a prize.

A second option includes a Toast to Dan. Thanks to a partnership with Red Deer’s Troubled Monk, you can toast the late Dan Jefferies by raising a glass of “Why Wouldn’t Ya?” golden ale – now available for purchase at Troubled Monk (1-5551 45 Street).

Starting June 15, one dollar from every six pack sold will be donated to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre. You can also order online at www.troubledmonk.com. Each can features a photo of Dan Jefferies on the label.

After 18 months of chemotherapy, Dan Jefferies passed away at the age of 56.

“I don’t know if there’s enough words to describe him, but he was loving, caring, and always thinking about other people over himself,” says Jefferies. “Always there to help, and always had a positive view on life. If an obstacle came in his way, he didn’t think, “Oh, well we can’t do it”. “Now we better think of a different option on how we can still do it.” That’s where the whole virtual idea came from.”
