Red Deer College has announced temporary layoffs for 47 permanent employees as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

College officials say the layoffs are being issued between today and Tuesday (April 21) and will be in effect until further notice.

RDC says those being laid off will receive Records of Employment, allowing them to apply for Employment Insurance and other government COVID-19 financial assistance they may qualify for.

Since the start of the pandemic, RDC says 145 casual, part-time, or term-certain employees have also been issued Records of Employment (ROE) due to shortage of work as a result of this pandemic in order to give them access available benefits.

The college says they intend to recall laid off individuals back to work at a future date.

RDC currently employs about 1,400 individuals in full-time, part-time, term certain and casual positions.

“I appreciate the passion and hard work that all of our employees bring to their careers at RDC, serving our students and community members every day. Having to temporarily layoff some of our colleagues as we navigate this unprecedented situation is especially hard, and this type of information is never easy to share,” Dr. Peter Nunoda, RDC President says in a release. “However, it is our responsibility to ensure the business of the College continues, even in times of challenge and uncertainty.”

RDC says it is committed to ensuring online program and service delivery for its students is maintained during the COVID-19 situation, while at the same time witnessing reduced revenue. This led to difficult decisions being made about temporary employee lay-offs.

College officials say RDC continues to plan its budget for the 2020/2021 academic year, and those decisions will be shared as they are finalized.
