150 new spaces

Construction underway on new continuing care facility in Red Deer

Feb 28, 2020 | 3:43 PM

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Points West Living continuing care facility in north Red Deer took place on Friday.

The expansion of the existing facility along Taylor Drive north of 67 Street will add 150 rooms for residents and create over 100 permanent jobs.

“As our population ages here, the more capacity we have for people that develop needs to come into communities like this, is a must. There’s a hockey stick curve coming, so projects like this are badly needed,” said Doug Mills, CEO of Points West Village. “This is a great project for both PWL and the City of Red Deer, as it will create local construction employment and permanent healthcare positions.”

The facility will offer a mix of care levels, including specialized dementia care, independent living and 24-hour onsite support for individuals with complex health needs.

SE Health, a not-for-profit organization contracted by Alberta Health Services (AHS), has provided care at the city’s existing 139-bed PWL facility since 2016, and will also provide care at the new care centre.

“Seniors and vulnerable Albertans deserve to age with dignity close to family and friends,” said Adriana LaGrange, MLA for Red Deer-North. “Once built, these new continuing care spaces at Point West Living’s second facility in Red Deer will provide seniors from central Alberta with access to care and supports in the community they love. I look forward to watching as this project takes shape over the coming months.”

Mills added that Points West Living expects the have the building turned over to them by May, then staff will be trained and prepared before residents move into the facility.
