BABY, IT'S (STILL) COLD OUTSIDE!

Red Deer sets record low, comes close to another

Jan 15, 2020 | 9:13 AM

RED DEER- If it’s going to be this cold it might as well be record-setting, right?

Red Deer set a new record low this morning (Wed.) when the temperature hit an unofficial -42.5 Celsius at the Red Deer Regional Airport. That broke the old record of -40.6 that was recorded back in 1950.

It could have been the second straight day of record cold as we missed tying the Jan. 14 record low of -42.8 by just 0.5 degrees. That record was also set back in 1950.

Wind chills have added to the misery by making it feel more like -50 in some parts of central Alberta.

Thursday and Friday will remain cold but probably not record breaking.

An extreme cold warning remains in effect for Red Deer and most of the province.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes,” says Environment Canada. “If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

There is relief in sight as the forecast high for Sunday is -13 and it gets even better for Monday with Environment Canada calling for a high of -2.
